About Custom Mouthguards

Mouth guards can serve different purposes for different patients. Dentists and even primary care providers may recommend mouth guards to help patients who grind their teeth, snore, have sleep apnea, or simply would like to protect their teeth from injury while playing certain sports.

Is a Mouthguard Right for You?

Why Do I Need a Mouthguard?

Dental Injuries are often caused by playing sports. When children and adults neglect to wear mouth guards while participating in sports, injuries can happen unexpectedly. Regardless of the sport, there is always a risk of dental injury and mouth problems.

Mouthguards are also prescribed to patients who experience trouble sleeping. If your jaw clenches or your teeth grind together, this is called grinding. When this happens, teeth can become worn, chipped, broken, or otherwise damaged. A mouth guard creates a barrier between the teeth, preventing damage during the night.

Dr. Bishop can custom-make a mouth guard to fit your mouth for patients who grind their teeth, snore, or deal with sleep apnea. A well-fitting mouth guard provides the highest level of comfort and stays in place easily. This helps patients sleep more comfortably.

Mouth guards can also be created to specifically help with snoring or mild sleep apnea. These mouth guards address jaw and tongue placement to keep the airway securely open while sleeping.

Are There Side Effects or Risks Associated with Using a Mouthguard?

Anything new added into our daily routines takes some getting used to, and mouth guards are no different. Patients may experience minor irritation or soreness when first using a new mouth guard. However, if pain increases or doesn’t go away after a few days, you should talk to Dr. Bishop and reevaluate the fit of your mouth guard.

If pain is ignored, it can cause your jaw to become misaligned or your teeth to move. It is also very important to keep your mouth guard clean by brushing it, keeping it in its case when not in use, and keeping its case clean daily. A mouth guard that is not kept clean can lead to other oral health problems, such as tooth decay.
