Tooth Extractions

About Tooth Extractions

Although many interventions are available to repair or restore a tooth with minor decay, there are times when a tooth must be extracted for the patient's ultimate health and comfort.

If a tooth is severely damaged from a traumatic incident or severely decayed and beyond repair, an extraction may be necessary. Periodontal disease, overcrowding, or impaction may be other reasons a tooth needs to be extracted by Dr. Bishop. Dr. Bishop will only recommend extracting a tooth if all other options to restore it have been ruled out.

At Dental Dimensions in Dallas, TX, Dr. Bishop will discuss your condition and treatment plan thoroughly before recommending an extraction.

Preparing for a Tooth Extraction

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

If a tooth or teeth require extraction, Dr. Bishop will first administer an anesthetic injection in the surrounding area of the tooth. The tooth is then loosened from the bone and socket through the use of an instrument called an elevator. You will not feel pain during this process, but you will likely experience the sensation of pressure that is being put on your tooth and bone.

At Dental Dimensions, our team offers a sedation option to ensure every patient is as comfortable as possible during the procedure. If you have questions or concerns about the sedation dentistry options available during your tooth extraction, please discuss them with Dr. Bishop during your next visit.

After the tooth is removed, Dr. Bishop will clear out any infected tissue, clean the socket, address any loose tooth fragments or sharp bone, and stitch the area.

What Aftercare is Needed for Tooth Extractions?

After having a tooth extraction, it will take a few days to fully recover.

Preventing infection, controlling bleeding, and managing discomfort are the main priorities during recovery.

For the first 24 hours:

  • Do not rinse your mouth, drink from a straw, or eat solid foods.

  • Prop your head up with a pillow when lying down, and avoid much activity during the first day.

  • Gradually introduce solid foods after the first day

  • Avoid the extraction site when brushing and flossing.

It is normal to feel some pain and experience some swelling after the procedure, especially when the anesthesia wears off. This should be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. However, if you experience bleeding more than 4 hours after the procedure, severe pain, nausea, fever, or chills, alert Dr. Bishop as soon as possible.
